Gilbertine Courtyard - Now Open

Updated: Jun 27, 2023

Gilbertine Community Courtyard Refurbishment Project

It is with great pleasure that we officially opened the new Gilbertine Community Courtyard at a ceremony in Chicksands on Tuesday 13 June.

The work to bring the Gilbertine Community Centre Courtyard into the heart of the unit was finished last month with the space now providing an area for families and their children to relax, socialise and enjoy the coming summer months.

What used to be a dull unused space that encouraged weeds to grow at an alarming rate, and which would not have looked out of place as a location in Sir Arthur Conon Doyle’s ‘The Lost World,’ has been totally transformed into an area that is welcoming, clean and bright.

It has been a long road but, with the support of both site personnel and external agencies, it finally all came together.

Located in Bedfordshire, the Centre is home to the Garrison Church and has offices for the Chaplain, Community Development Worker and Welfare Officer. Open to all personnel on site the building has a huge amount to offer including a soft play area, which is used for community events throughout the week, a café, a multi-faith prayer/reflection room and a maternity room.

Being a tri-service unit, it was decided that charities from each of the services would be approached to support the project. It is fair to say that none of this would have been possible without the generous support of the Army Central Fund, RAF Benevolent Fund, RN/RM Charity as well as the Local Initiative Grant.

I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of undertaking a project large or small to consider approaching these fantastic charities who do so much to support the military and their families.
